Africa PID Alliance at Viz Africa Conference 2024: Harnessing data for scientific and socio-economic development

[Nairobi, Kenya]- From February 5th to 7th, 2024, the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD) held the VizAfrica Conference 2024 at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). This event served as a forum for encouraging discussions and advancements in the fields of data management, artificial intelligence, and open science.

Over the course of three days, the conference facilitated insightful discussions on various topics, in relation to the theme “Data stewardship and use for scientific and socio-economic development”.  The discourse delved into the following pivotal components, each playing a crucial role in advancing Africa’s digital transformation agenda:

  • Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, 
  • Computer Graphics, Media, and Animation, 
  • Agriculture, Food, and Nutrition Security, 
  • Data Stewardship, Analytics, Visualization, and IoTs, 
  • Robotic Process Automation (RPA), 
  • Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, 
  • Policy Design, Analysis, and Strategic Management, as well as E-Health and Universal Health Coverage. 

Among the esteemed speakers at the event was Joy Owango, Executive Director of TCC Africa-Training Centre in Communication, who introduced the Open Infrastructure program, the Africa PID Alliance (APA). This initiative, which aims at promoting open-source data sharing, highlights Africa’s commitment to leveraging data for socio-economic development.

The VizAfrica Conference 2024 not only provided a platform for stakeholders to rally behind the AfricaPIDAlliance (APA) and chart a course towards a more inclusive and collaborative future but also emphasized the importance of robust data systems and governance frameworks to ensure the responsible and equitable use of data across industries.
